Belbek - А new tomato variety for open ground in the Republic of Crimea

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world. For humans, tomatoes are an inexhaustible source of such useful substances as ascorbic acid, vitamins A and C, phenolic compounds, etc. Presently, it is a big challenge to feed the exponentially growing world population in a changing climate. To address this issue, crop breeding is an effective strategy. Moreover, crop breeding and cultivation of domestic varieties of vegetable crops, as part of the import substitution programme, will contribute to achieving food security. As a result of the Crimean breeders’ work, a new determinant tomato variety Belbek, which is suitable both for industrial production and home gardens, was created. This variety was developed as a result of multiple individual-family selection (2018 to 2022) from the population of the Crimean region. Tomato plants were evaluated by a set of traits according to the methodological guidelines and the international classifier CEV for Solanum lycopersicum L. species (1986). Agrotechnology for growing tomatoes - generally accepted in the Republic of Crimea. Tomato plants were irrigated by a drip system. Planting scheme - 90 + 50 ½ 25-30 cm, fourfold replication. Accounting area of the plot - 14 m. Potential yield - 42,5 t/ha, dry matter content - up to 7.3%, vitamin C - 23.8%. The characteristics of the new tomato variety Belbek are in line with consumer demand, which means it can be used for import substitution in the field of breeding and seed production of vegetable crops.
