In defense of oak acorns small-fruited forms

Common oak is the main forest-forming species in the Central Chernozem region. In this report the characteristic fruiting plus trees of oak and polymorphism of acorn size and mass. The value of our material is explained by the fact that the monitoring of fruiting was carried out on the same objects (plus trees) for more than 20 years. From the best of the gene pool is dominated by oak acorns small and middling categories. Cotyledons and seedling acorns those categories better protected the epithelial tissues, compared with the large-fruited forms. With a mass of large acorns - 8.05 g, the protective peel of the seed is 1.23 g or 15.3%, while in small - fruited forms with a mass of acorns - 1.50 g they are respectively 0.38 g or 25%. For this reason, small-fruited acorns are better stored and are more viable. The authors of the communication are of the opinion that the rejection of positive trees producing acorns of small-fruited categories will contribute to the reduction of intraspecific diversity of future plantings.
