Economically valuable traits analysis of alfalfa new varieties and promising lines

The purpose of the current study was to analyze the economically valuable traits of the new alfalfa varieties and promising lines developed at the ARC "Donskoy". The study was conducted in the nurseries of the competitive variety testing of the laboratory for breeding and seed production of perennial grasses of the "ARC “Donskoy" in 2020-2023. The objects of research were 2 varieties and 6 promising lines of alfalfa. The mean height of plants of the standard variety Rostovskaya 90 was 77 cm; the lines Sin 18/95, Sin 25/95 and Sin 8/95 with a height of 80-81 cm significantly exceeded it. The foliage of the standard variety, on average, was 45%, the lines Sin 18/ 95, Sin 25/95 and Sin 8/95, with indicators of 51%, 49%, 49%, respectively, significantly exceeded the standard variety. Green mass productivity of the standard variety Rostovskaya 90 varied over the years from 24.5 t/ha (2021) to 29.0 t/ha (2023) and averaged 27.1 t/ha, with the lines Sin 18/95, Sin 25/95 and Sin 8/95 significantly exceeding the standard variety with indicators of 30.1 t/ha, 30.5 t/ha and 30.1 t/ha on average, respectively. The crude protein percentage in the studied varieties and lines was at a relatively high level and amounted to 18.24-20.87%. The lines Sin 18/95 (0.544 t/ha), Sin 25/95 (0.531 t/ha) and Sin 3/95 (0.542 t/ha) had the highest seed yields that were significantly higher than that of the standard variety. The highest indicators have been demonstrated by the lines Sin 18/95 and Sin 25/95, the plant height of which was 80 cm and 81 cm, foliage was 51% and 49%, green mass yield per 1 cutting was 30.1 t/ha and 30.5 t/ha, seed yield was 0.544 t/ha and 0.531 t/ha, with 19.77% and 19.25% of crude protein at the standard level.
