Development of laboratory diagnostic criteria for autoimmune thyroid pathology in cows

The paper presents studies of thyroid function in lactating cows in the Middle Urals. Data on the blood content of total T4, antibodies to thyroglobulin and antibodies to thyroid peroxidase in cows are given. As a result of the analysis of data on the content of total thyroxine, amount of antibodies to thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase the standard intervals were determined, which allow to judge about their physiological content, and also to draw conclusions about pathological values. We had proposed to consider as physiological values of total T4 in cows in the Middle Urals the values in the range from 59.9 to 98.9 nmol/l, and as pathological the values lower or higher than this range. The level of thyroglobulin antibodies is defined as a physiological value in the range of 0 to 0.89 IU/ml, those exceeding 0.9 IU/ml are pathological. The level of thyroid peroxidase antibodies is defined as physiological in the range of 0.0 to 1.35 ME/ml, those exceeding 2.9 ME/ml are pathological. Correlation analysis of data on total thyroxine, thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies revealed significant positive correlations between thyroxine and thyroglobulin antibodies (r=0.75) between thyroxine and thyroperoxidase antibodies (r=0.89), and between thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase antibodies (r=0.65). On the basis of the appearance of diagnostic criteria beyond "normal" values we identified 4 groups of cows: a group of cows in which numerical values of all three criteria had "normal" values - their share was 5%, the second group of animals with excess of at least one criteria their share was 40%, compliance with two criteria also was 40%, and compliance with all three criteria was 15%. The thyroid abnormalities detected in the cows were most likely associated with the development of autoimmune pathological processes, which was confirmed by the presence of antibodies to thyroid function proteins in the blood plasma of the cows examined.
