Promising varieties-donors of selectively significant tobacco traits of the UNU "Collection of genetic resources of the genus Nicocyanus-tobacco, shag and wild species"

UNU "Collection of genetic resources of the genus Nicotiana-tobacco, shag and wild species" VNIITT, has more than 3000 cultivars. The gene pool stored in the collection, on the basis of which new promising tobacco varieties were created earlier and are now being created, serves as the source material for breeding. In addition, the variety samples of the collection are widely used as model objects for solving problems of fundamental science. At the same time, the current level of development of agricultural technologies determines the need to expand the range of their use in the selection process. The aim of the work is to screen and isolate donor varieties of economically valuable traits from the collection of genetic resources of the genus Nicotiana for their use in hybridization when creating new source material and varieties that meet modern requirements. In 2020, 357 cultivars of the Eastern subspecies and 100 cultivars of the American subspecies were planted, prototyped and studied from the collection. Cultivars were studied according to morphological characteristics: plant height, number of leaves per plant, size of the middle-tier leaf and leaf blade. According to the results of the research, donor varieties were identified according to the above economically valuable characteristics: five promising varieties of the Trapezond variety type (the number of leaves on the plant is 27-37 pcs., the length of the middle-tier leaf is 30-40 cm, the width is 18-24 cm); 3 varieties the variety type Tyk-Kulak (number of leaves on the plant 30-33 pcs., leaf length 29-32 cm, width 17-18 cm; varieties of the variety type Samsun (number of leaves 37-44, leaf length 24-27 cm, width - 13-19 cm; varieties of the variety types Virginia, Burley and Mariland have multi-leaf (up to 36 leaves on the plant) and large-leaved (leaf length up to 48 cm, width up to 28 cm) variety types. The selected varieties will be used in hybridization to create a new source material.
