Test plantations of Pinus sylvestris in Karelia Republic

To create second-and higher-order seed orchards it is necessary to conduct a field test of selected plus trees for their productivity, stability, straightness, full-woodiness, wood density and other economically valuable indicators. But due to various reasons (organizational, economic, technological, etc.) in our country, such work is carried out only in a small number, and then at experimental facilities, laid mainly in the Soviet era. Many of these sites have been lost or are in an abandoned state. But some of them remain and are valuable sources of new knowledge about programs for breeding improvement of forest tree species. The purpose of this work was to study the number and success of test plantations of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) on the example of the Republic of Karelia. One of these objects is the largest complex of test plantations laid in the Petrozavodsk forestry of the Republic. Research conducted here has shown that the productivity of offspring grown from the best plus trees was significantly higher (from 12 to 115%) than the average for the entire population of tested trees. Given that these data were obtained on plants of the second class of age and in the conditions of a non-repetitive complex, they should be considered as preliminary. But it is already clear that the use of seeds from second-order forest-seed orchards will significantly increase the productivity of the created forest plantations.
Keywords: Scots pine, plus selection, growth, seed orchards, test plantations, indicators of prospects.
