The length of the tubers dormant period of some potato varieties and their hybrids in the conditions of the Leningrad region

Food Security of the Russian Federation dictates the need for a significant increase in the competitiveness of the created domestic varieties of potatoes. Along with such characteristics as productivity, quality of tubers, resistance to diseases and pests, the duration of the physiological dormancy of tubers is also quite important, since in the conditions of the Russian Federation potatoes have to be stored for a long time. The article presents the results of determining the dormancy period of potato tubers of the Rannii Zhukovsky, Liga, Zorachka, Krepish, Zhuravinka, Naiada, Breez, Snegir, Charodey, Krasavchik, Nevsky, Manifest, Charoit varieties grown in the Leningrad Region, which are compared with the corresponding characteristics of hybrids derived from crosses between these varieties. The smallest duration of the dormancy period of the tubers was in the varieties Charoit, Snegir, Zorachka and the Charodey, and the largest - varieties Zhuravinka and Manifest (132.6 and 126.7 days, respectively). In hybrid populations, splitting was observed based on the length of the period of physiological dormancy. In this case, the shortest dormant length in the hybrid population was approximately equal to or slightly greater than the dormant period of the parent variety with a shorter physiological dormancy, and the longest dormancy period among hybrids exceeded the dormant period of the parental varieties, sometimes significantly. For example, 159.1 days in the hybrid Zhuravinka ½ Naiada. The data obtained show that the creation of competitive domestic varieties of potatoes with a sufficiently long period of physiological dormancy of tubers is quite achievable. Breeders should only pay enough attention to this trait when conducting the breeding process.
