Development of national rice production complex

Rice is the most stable and high-yielding crop in the country. Over the past few years its yield has been 2-3 times higher than the yield of wheat. Rice cultivation specifics depend on the climate and weather conditions of a specific year to a smaller extent than those of other grain cultures. In Russia they grow rice in nine regions. As noted above, the Krasnodar Territory has been traditionally the largest rice-growing region due to the large size of cultivated areas and the highest crop yields, accounting for approximately 80% of Russian production. Within a short period of time, the industry has achieved outstanding results due to the state support measures combined with private investments. Indicators of rice yields, production and self-sustainment of the country have increased sharply. Moreover, the country has turned from a major importer into a sizeable rice exporter. Rice growing here is geographically compact. Over 90% of production is concentrated in the regions of the South of Russia. The largest producer is the Krasnodar Territory. In addition to the regions of the Southern Federal District and the North Caucasian Federal District, rice producers are the regions of the Far East, mainly Primorsky Region and the Jewish Autonomous Region, which produces rice on a small scale. Other regions of the country are unsuitable for growing this crop.
