Methods of pest - rodents control in high-density plantations of fruit trees in the Kuban zone (based on experimental training farm “Kuban”)

The lack of systematic monitoring of damage to fruit plantations caused by various small mammals, in particular hares, as well as the modern scientific researches on this problem, new methods of fruit crop protection and scientifically substantiated recommendations to minimize damage from pest-rodents lead to insufficient attention to this problem both on the part of amateur gardeners, and large farms, which sometimes threatens quite serious economic losses. The main danger of damage caused by hares is not only in general oppression of a plant and possible death of a tree due to the violation of passing vessels, but also in getting into the injured part of fungal, bacterial and viral infections, harmful insects, measures to combat which require considerable economic investments and are often ineffective. In connection with the current problem, the authors consider the main methods of fruit crop protection from pest-rodents, present the results of observations of apple-trees, pear and cherry trees in a high-density garden using intensive cultivation technology on the experimental training farm "Kuban" in winter periods of 2017-2019. The researches established that among the studied crops only apple and pear trees had traces of damage from hares. No traces of damage were noted on the cherry trees due to the biochemical characteristics of plants. The fence of netting is installed along the perimeter of the garden which significantly reduced the activity of hares, but a month later new traces of damage to stems were found. Damage to trees was 6%. After using a special paint, damage to trees by hares did not exceed 2%.
