Sugar beet seed production in connection with new selection work trends

A brief overview is presented of seed production processes evolution, unjustified risks analysis and missed opportunities in the choice of selection work areas, methods of seed production and pre-sowing plant processing of sugar beet seeds. The level of preservation and realization of the genetic potential of the lines (components) and newly created hybrids of sugar beet are largely dependent on growing methods and quality of seeds pre-sowing treatment. Errors in the implementation of the experts’ recommendations in the process of growing and industrial preparation of seeds for sowing can reduce the productivity of the hybrids by 35-45% or more. The article highlights the importance of a number of governmental tasks fulfillment on transition to biotechnology, including Programs of may 15, 2012 ("Biotech 2020") under the lack of finances and of appropriate laboratory equipment. The way out is- in creative use of modern methods and techniques of classical selection and seed production, in attracting new starting heterozygous material, allowing 1.5-2 times acceleration of selection and seed production process.
