Аnalysis of the promising clonal rootstocks of the stone crops in the Crimea

This work contains the results of the 17 promising rootstocks study over the last couple of decades. In the course of research the rootstocks for the following stone crops: plum with Vengerka Azhanskaya, Renklod Altana varieties, and peach with Veteran, Collinz, Sochnyi varieties (Russian selection for the most part) were observed. The research was conducted under agroclimatic conditions of the Crimean piedmont zone on calcareous-high (25-30%) soils. It was found that the key to the high-effective fruit production in the intensive plantings is the right selection of rootstocks, that are adapted to soil growing condition, compatible with most cultivars, resistant to biotic and abiotic climatic factors, match with varietal features to the maximum extent, making it possible to unleash the full potential of the culture. We chose rootstocks with high level of adaptability, low and medium growth power in the garden, and high yield of the grafted cultivars: for plum, cherry plum and peach - Cuban 86, VVA-1. The growth power of trees on these rootstocks by 15-30% lower than on seedling ones, and yield by 20-30% greater as compared to controls. The highest yield was achieved for the plum Vengerka Azhanskaya on the Cuban 86 (40,7) and VVA-1 (32,8); and for the peach Veteran/Cuban 86 (28,6 t/ha). As for other varieties, the best results were found for combinations with the same rootstocks. Fruits of this cultivar and rootstock pairs have high merchantability, bright color and great palatability traits. In addition to that, Cuban 86 is notable for its mature root system that significantly increases plant drought hardness that in turn plays important role for regions with hydrologic balance lack.
