Gross silicon content and its forms available to plants in leached chernozem of the Western Ciscaucasia under agrogenesis]

Results of determination of the gross silicon content and its forms available to plants and its compounds in leached Chernozem of Western Caucasus in the conditions of Agrigento are presented. Optimization of silicon nutrition increases the plant resistance to adverse environmental factors, fungal diseases and increases their productivity. However, the lack of reliable and highly informative method for the determination of available for plants forms of silicon compounds in the soil hinders the wide application of silicon fertilizer in agriculture. Despite significant gross reserves of silica in the leached Chernozem (~68% SiO2), under conditions of Agrigento only 0,03-0,04% of total content of this elementis is available to plants. In the layer 0-40 cm of the soil available to plants forms of compounds of silicon are distributed quite evenly with a slightly higher concentration in the topsoil. The application of mineral fertilizers on the fields of crop rotation stimulates the formation of available silicon compounds forms to plants in the soil. The leached Chernozem has insufficient amount of available silicon for optimal growth and development of plants.
