African swine fever in Russia: distribution and control methods

African swine fever has been a threat to the national economy for a long time. Despite the containment measures taken, the virus is spreading deep into the country, involving previously prosperous areas. In the period from 2007 to 2017, indirect losses from the consequences of ASF amounted to 50-70 billion rubles due to downtime of enterprises, and direct losses amounted to 5 billion rubles due to the destruction of 800 thousand pigs. During this period, 1274 outbreaks were recorded. In 2016, there was a sharp jump in the number of registered cases - 298 outbreaks, which accounted for 24% of the total number of diseases over 10 years, the damage is 1.5 billion rubles and is 30% of the total losses. The most unfavorable in terms of the spread of the disease were the Central Federal District and the Southern Federal District, in which for the period from 2007 to July 31, 2018, 600 and 318 unfavorable points were identified, respectively. Moreover, in the Central Federal District in 275 points, which is 45.8% of the total, the disease was recorded in domestic pigs, and in the Southern Federal District in 238, which is 75%. Among the regions of the Central Federal District, the largest number of unfavorable points was recorded in Moscow - 78, Smolensk - 92, Ryazan - 68 and Tver regions - 82. In the Southern Federal District, the most unfavorable were Krasnodar Territory - 85 points, Volgograd - 94 and Rostov Region - 89. As of March 28, 2022, 15 outbreaks of ASF were registered, of which 6 in the population of domestic pigs, and 9 in the population of wild boars. 3 cases registered each in the Amur Region and Primorsky Territory.
