Water regime assessment for pears (Pyrus L.) varieties and types

More than 120 samples - 59 varieties, including 43 varieties of European origin and 16 varieties of East Asian, 26 species, 38 ecological forms of Caucasian pear - were included in the study of drought resistance from the collections of pear genetic resources at the Maikop Experimental Station of N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR). Phenotyping is a powerful method to study the effects of abiotic factors on plants. The assessment of the main indicators of the water regime was performed: the water content of the leaves, their morning water deficit, the loss of water by the leaves during their wilting. The indicators of the water regime for plants are most closely related to the general resistance of the samples to drought and high air temperatures. Based on adaptability and indicators of the water regime, pear samples were identified that have increased leaves resistance to dehydration, which can be recommended for cultivation in the foothill zone of the Republic of Adygea within areas with limited water supply. Caucasian pear, oleaster pear, snow pear, willow-leaf pear, Ussuri pear from the species collection of genetic resources of the Maikop Experimental Station of N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources may be of interest for breeding for drought resistance.
Keywords: Pear, varieties, species, water regime, drought resistance, abiotic factors, water loss by leaves.
