New variety of spring barley Povolzhsky 49 for the Central Volga region

In the Russian Federation, barley is one of the most important food and forage crops. The high ability to adapt to various environmental factors determines the widespread distribution of this culture throughout the country. The aim of the research is to create a new variety of spring barley with high productivity and grain quality, resistant to unfavorable biotic and abiotic environmental factors and adapted to the conditions of the Middle Volga region. The article presents the results of many years breeding work on the creation of a new variety of spring barley Povolzhsky 49. The main economic and biological characteristics of the variety - submedicum kind - are presented . Average yield in competitive variety testing for the period 2016-2018 - 2.19 t/ha, the increase to the Berkut standard was 0.26 t/ha. The maximum yield was obtained in 2020 in a competitive test - 3.49 t/ha. According to the results of state variety testing in the Middle Volga (7) region in 2020, the average yield of the new variety Povolzhsky 49 was 4.13 t/ha, which is 0.27 t/ha higher than the standards. Plant height is 50-55 cm, nature - 666-695 g/l, 1000 grain weight - 42-48 g, and crude protein content is 12.9-15.1%. The variety is mid-season; the growing season is 67-83 days. Lodging resistance is 1-2 points higher than in the Berkut standard. For the period 2016-2018 there were no signs of damage to the variety by dusty smut and stem rust. Since 2020, the variety has been undergoing State variety testing in the Middle Volga (7) region of the Russian Federation.
