Poplar selection in flood conditions of Ukraine steppe zone

For protective afforestation, development and reclamation of flooded lands, various types of forest woody plants are used. In some cases, the most promising for these purposes are poplars. Nine different genotypes of poplars were studied during field variety testing in floodplain conditions of Ukraine forest-steppe. The dynamics of their survival, growth in height, diameter, volume of trunks and wood stock was studied. As a result of long-term researches perspective varieties and clones of poplars are allocated. The three euramerican varieties Vernirubens, Marilandica, Regenerata and one intersectional hybrid of Professor M.M. Veresin Es-38 were the fastest grow at 21 years old with survival from 74 to 98%, average heights from 24.0 to 25.5 m, average diameters from 29.6 to 32.0 cm, average trunk volumes from 0.68 to 0.86 m3 and stock of stem wood from 711 to 840 m3/ha. Those verieties can use for creation of plantations, protective and other agronomic ameliorations plantings. Male varieties-clones Vernirubens, Es-38 and Pyramidal-osokorevy Kamyshinsky bred by A.V. Albensky are recommended for landscaping. The balsam poplar in these conditions proved to be uncompetitive.
