The long-term testing results of various poplars’ forms and hybrids in Volgograd Region

The variety testing of various poplars’ forms and hybrids had been carried out during the period from 1989 to 2017 in Podtelkovsky and Rudnyansky Forestries, situated in Volgograd region. The testing sites had been made in 1989. 18 domestic and foreign breeding poplars’ varieties were represented on these sites. The survival rate of poplars were depended on period and density of planting, soil moisture and especially on the testing poplars’ genotypes. The testing poplars’ growth and survival analyses in the age of 29 years allowed selecting the most able to resist and best timber productive poplars clones. There are first of all euroamerican varieties (Bacheliery, Brabantica-175, Vernirubens, Regenerata, Robusta, Sacrau-59 and Serotina), and from the domestic hybrids the best ones were Pioneer and intersectional hybrid E.s.-38. The wood stock of selected poplars’ clones in the age of 29 varied from 483 to 636 m3/ha. At the same time the wood stock of the local P. nigra L. (as compared) was 254 m3/ha. So the selected poplars’ clones and varieties can be recommended for plantations and shelter belts.
