Approaches to the analysis of public transport passenger flow

The public transport network, being an obligatory part of every modern city, badly needs mathematical and methodical support for assessing the effectiveness of its work, as well as for planning and forecasting, the main source of data for which is the statistics on passenger flow. The survey of passenger flow makes it possible to estimate the occupancy of vehicles, determine the necessary number of vehicles on the routes, their type and capacity. Reliability of information on the existing passenger flow allows to adjust the traffic schedule along the routes, on the basis of carrier's non-loss activity and maximum meeting passengers' requirements. Today there is no comprehensive methodology for the passenger flow survey, which could provide high data representativeness for their further analysis. It is proposed to develop a set of solutions that allow multicriteria optimization of public transport traffic and passenger flow data analysis. The complex being developed should provide an opportunity to take into account seasonal changes in the transport system load, redistribution of transport units between the routes of the same transport subsystem in specific cases (emergencies, overload of the route and underuse of another, etc.). The use of the proposed complex will allow correction of the time intervals along the route, including periodic interval reduction, due to the existing dynamics of passenger flow, change the traffic speed mode (if possible), determine the required number of stopping points, and also to minimize the number of transfers in the main directions of passenger flow (for example, to sleeping areas and industrial centers). This article is devoted to the analysis of the approach applied to the passenger flows survey as well as the development of recommendations the improvement of its quality and efficiency.
