Plants’ morphological variability and features of the spatial structure of cenopopulations of Clematis vitalba L., (Ranunculaceae) in the North-Western Caucasus

Morphological variability of the plants of Clematis vitalba based on the analysis of generative traits characterizing parameters of flower and vegetative symptoms characterizing parameters of the plant have been studied. Two-factor variance analysis model with the "cenopopulation" and "year" factors was used. It was established that population differences of different traits are specific, with the exception of coenopopulations 6 and 7, which for some traits do not constitute evidence of statistically significant differences with each other. Clematis vitalba is of interest for breeding as an ornamental plant. Many modern varieties are produced by crossing Clematis vitalba with other members of the genus Clematis L. In areas with dry climate Clematis vitalba is recommended for vertical gardening. It is planted as ground cover plant. Clematis vitalba is a honey plant producing fragrant honey; it is also a medicinal plant. In the Caucasus, folk medicine uses fresh leaves. They contain phenol carbonic acids, vitamin E, carotene. The roots contain saponins, caffeic acid, essential oil is found in flowers, and the above-ground parts of plants are rich in tannins. Drugs based on Clematis vitalba are effective for muscle aches and headaches, sexually transmitted diseases, dermatosis, psoriasis, ulcers, inflammation of the bladder, malaria, conjunctivitis, and as a healing agent in the treatment of rheumatism. Fresh leaves, buds and flowers are used to deal with some sucking insects and mites.
