Antibacterial activity of ultrafine metals

The aim of study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of ultrafine powders of metals in the laboratory. Copper, zinc and iron ultrafine powders in glycerol were studied. Antimicrobial activity was determined by metal powders limiting dilution method and diffusion method in agar in standard and "field" strains of microorganisms. The suspensions of nanoparticles of copper and zinc showed antimicrobial activity on all the microorganisms tested, but the power of this action was different. The suspension of iron nanoparticles antimicrobial activity did not show. It was found that the greatest antibacterial activity of copper nanoparticles is exhibited against St. aureus, and zinc nanoparticles E. coli, iron nanoparticles antibacterial properties were not identified.
