Biological control of cotton bollworm population by combining male catching with pheromone traps and applying viral preparations

Biological system for protection of tobacco leaves and its seeds against widespread polyphagian phytophage - cotton bollworm is proposed. It is based on mass catching of males with pheromone traps («male vacuum») in combination with biological preparations. This system is compatible with seed production technology on collection and selection tobacco areas where inflorescences are isolated. As the result it has been discovered that regular (every year) mass bollworm male catching on the fourth year of application greatly decreases bollworm population. For increasing efficiency of this method during the first years of catching when 10-15 butterflies caught per ha a week it is advisable to apply on inflorescences treatment with biological preparations which are based on nucleopolyhedro virus FermoVirin XC (4 g/ha) or Helicovex (0,2 l/ha). Triple applying of bioinsecticides on non-isolated plants decreases quantity of maggots by 72-83% and damaged bolls by 73-75%. Applying preparations on inflorescences with their further isolation decreases quantity of maggots by 65-79% and damaged bolls by 68-70%. This system can also be used for other crops damaged by cotton bollworm especially for bio products where utilizing of chemical compounds is strictly controlled.
